"The addition of 3% Roussanne is the big change this year," Nikolas Krankl mentioned. "It gives both the Grenache and the Syrah a little lift." The 2018 Grenache Off the Record is composed of 75% Grenache, 11% Mourvèdre, 11% Syrah and 3% Roussanne, coming from Manfred and Elaine Krankl's The Third Twin and Cumulus vineyards with a proportion from Sebastiano vineyard. Forty-five percent whole cluster was used. It was aged for 20 months in French oak, 41% new, and was bottled in July 2020. Medium garnet-purple in color, it kicks off with meaty scents of beef drippings and peppered salami, giving way to dark fruits—blackberries, mulberries and black cherries—with hints of black soil, truffles, tapenade and a touch of mocha. Concentrated and full-on full-bodied in the mouth, this delivers bags of perfumed black fruits with lots of savory sparks and ripe, rounded tannins, finishing long and earthy. WA 95
