World Class Wine perspective

About this wine

DRC Montrachet 2021 750ml is a historic white Burgundy from a vintage shaped by severe April frosts, reportedly reducing Montrachet yields to only 4-5 barrels. The description frames it as a classic, electric, tension-driven wine with struck match and flint, rather than opulent weight.

The "Unicorn" of the Vintage: A Monument to Resilience

The 2021 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet is a historic bottle, but not for the reasons one might expect. This vintage will be remembered forever for the devastating April frosts that wiped out nearly 90% of the crop in the Montrachet vineyard. Consequently, the quantity produced is vanishingly small (reportedly only 4-5 barrels), making this arguably the most difficult-to-acquire bottle of white wine on the global market today.

Despite the microscopic yields, the wine itself is a triumph. Unlike the opulent, "solar" vintages of 2018, 2019, and 2020, the 2021 signals a return to a "classic" Burgundian profile. It is defined by electric acidity, tension, and a spine of steel. It is not a wine of weight, but of intense, vibrating energy—a diamond formed under extreme pressure.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: A breathtaking, "high-definition" bouquet. It opens with the domaine's signature reductive note—struck match and flint—which gives way to profound aromas of white flowers (acacia, hawthorn), lemon confit, and fresh hazelnut. There is a distinct "cool" minerality, smelling of wet limestone and sea spray.

  • Palate: The palate is defined by tension. While it possesses the requisite oiliness and viscosity of Montrachet, it is cut by a razor-sharp line of acidity that drives the flavors of green pear, white peach, and ginger across the tongue. It feels vertical and athletic rather than heavy.

  • Finish: An saline, iodine-laced finish that persists for minutes, leaving a savory impression of crushed rocks and almond paste.

Serving & Pairing Recommendations

  • Drinking Window: 2028–2050+. (This wine has the structure to age for decades).

  • Decanting: Mandatory. If opening young, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the matchstick reduction to integrate and the floral aromatics to soar.

  • Serving Temperature: Serve at 54–57°F (12–14°C). Do not serve too cold, or you will mask the texture.

  • Food Pairing: This wine demands the finest cuisine. Pair with lobster thermidor, turbot with truffle cream sauce, seared scallops, or Bresse chicken with morels.

Collector's Note The 2021 DRC Montrachet is an "investment singularity." Because the production was so catastrophically low, very few bottles will ever trade on the open market. Owning this bottle is not just about drinking a great wine; it is about possessing a piece of history that documents the climatic challenges of the 21st century. It is likely to command a significant premium over other vintages simply due to its scarcity.
