Angelus, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2014, 750ml
The Cabernet Franc Masterclass: Elegance & Intensity
The 2014 Château Angélus is a brilliant reminder that you don't need a "Century Vintage" to make world-class wine. In a year that favored patience, Hubert de Boüard crafted a wine that leans heavily on Cabernet Franc (50% of the blend), resulting in one of the most aromatic and intellectually stimulating wines in the estate’s recent history.
While the 2009 and 2010 are about power, the 2014 is about precision. It offers a "cool" fruit profile—crisp blackberry and red currant—balanced by a distinct mineral tension. It is a wine that feels athletic and muscular without being heavy, offering a drinking experience that is both refreshing and profoundly deep.
Tasting Notes
-
Nose: Soaring and floral. Because of the high percentage of Cabernet Franc, the nose is packed with violets, lilacs, and wild herbs. Beneath the flowers, you’ll find rich layers of Black Forest cake, kirsch, and graphite (pencil lead).
-
Palate: Medium-to-full bodied with a focus on tension. The fruit is pure and "crunchy"—think fresh black currants rather than jam. The tannins are present but incredibly fine-grained, giving the wine a structure that promises decades of life.
-
Finish: Long, saline, and savory, with a trailing note of mint tea and dark chocolate.

Serving & Pairing Recommendations
-
Drinking Window: Now through 2040.
-
Decanting: Essential if drinking now. Give it 2 hours in a decanter to allow the "nervous" energy of the vintage to relax and the fruit to come forward.
-
Serving Temperature: Serve at 60–62°F (15.5–16.5°C).
-
Food Pairing: The high acidity and herbal complexity make this a dream pairing for game. Try it with roasted duck breast with cherries, pheasant, or a herb-crusted rack of lamb.
Collector's Note The 2014 is widely considered the "over-achiever" of the decade. It trades at a significant discount to the 2015 and 2016 vintages but offers a similar level of sophistication. It is the perfect vintage to drink while you wait for your 2015s and 2016s to mature.
